Los Arribeños de San Francisco, a Fandango Project

The intention of the Cultural Responsiveness Project is bringing to life the history and stories of the men & women of Latinx origin during the 1800s, by developing a cultural experience to co- create an atmosphere of inclusion.

The main objectives are:

  • To create a cultural experience that promotes an atmosphere of inclusion.
  • To rekindle the sense of pride felt by the local Latino community in 1860s as Americans with Latino roots.
  • To promote Columbia as the anticipated destination of Cinco de Mayo, an American Holiday.
  • To shine light in Sonora’s cultural heritage
  • To create economic opportunities for Tuolumne County at large, as heritage tourism is an important component of the local economy.

Tuolumne County’s history spans from being the land of the Me-Wuk since immemorial times to witness tremendous devastation and changes provoked by colonization and the ‘gold fever,’ events that changed cultural paradigms forever.

It was also, at that time, one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas. One aspect of this diversity is the presence in this region of the Latin/Hispanic community since the 1600s, their influence and contributions are evident in the culture of our beautiful county, from language, cuisine, music, rodeos, to the name of the county seat: Sonora, which honors the founders who came from Sonora, Mexico.

We invite you to discover the many stories waiting to be heard, and the places that shelter the vestiges of that era.
